John: I think your comment on supplies and materials is simply not true. Can you provide evidence ? I have built (just for myself) for the past 10 years, and compare my prices to futures prices as well as the larger builder prices and it doesnt seem possible they average 30-50% less. There isnt that much margin - at least I dont pay that kind of margin. Now as to whether small builders fare better or worse, I think it has far more to do with managing cash flow & avoiding leverage then other issues.
