You're right that that change was fairly recent. If your argument is that we haven't been in near stasis for a very long time, I take your point. The question is where do we go from here. I don't see anything significant in kind. And the changes in volume would have to be large to be disruptive to the status quo. Ergo near stasis.

IMO, the reason the gun issue has faded into the background recently is because Bush and most Republican congress critters are pro gun, or at least not rabidly anti-gun.

I'd guess that if there's a power shift in the next two major elections, gun issues will move back to the front burner.
