But when we do, we need to recognize that doing this for the public good might leave us exposed to civil/criminal charges down the road. In a sense its just like civil disobedience. When you break the law, you must pay the consequences.

Maybe so... But my conscience would be clear knowing that beat the hell out of a socio-pathic thug in order to save lives than having to deal with the guilt of never having obtained the information because I "played by the rules"...

But lest I be misunderstood, I AM NOT advocating torture under any circumstances.

I'm merely acknowledging that when faced with a dire situation, human priorities are often skewed by the repercussions of inaction.

I find this to be directly analogous to rule of law versus law of war.

We go to war when we sense that the rule of law, whether domestic or international, has failed to provide a reasonable level of security.

We put civilized adherence to that ROL on hold and engage in what can only be called legal murder against our enemies, real or perceived.

So while torture being perpetrated under a rule of law (criminal justice system) is abhorrent, under the "rules" of warfare when murder is perpetrated by both sides on a wholesale basis, beating someone up so that the enemy is not able to commit murder against you, your comrades, family, or allies, should be taken in context.

I will come visit and i hope you will do the same for me.

You know I would... And so would quite a few others.

Hawk

I'm sure quite a number of us would come to visit you michael.... I might even try to get you a cake....

It really is a tough call about trying to imagine what we would do if called on...but if that someone was trying to injure my family, I know what I would try to do....even if I died trying.

The evidence now on the public record is overwhelming and, if we could have a jury, Vice President Dick Cheney would be found guilty of cooking the intelligence and lying us into war...
