That's highly simplified... I'd like to see your description of that "one path". :) Other than some rare exceptions, life on this planet reproduces either by cloning ( for example single-cell organisms) or by one male and one female passing on a mixture of their genes. The path is always forward in time and limited to the information in the parent's genes. In other evolutionary systems like language, the information might get written down and a reader might pick up bits of language from hundreds of years apart to create a new expression. It can be almost impossible to trace the actual influences. TP
