Our news colleagues work under the assumption that they should let the people know anything important that the reporters learn, unless there is some grave and overriding reason for withholding the information.

I'm still trying to find the news value in this story. Seems to me that to overcome reluctance to publish classified information you'd first have to find considerable news value. Do you see any? I'm skeptical about the explanation of its sufficiency as yet another example of the WH pattern that the Times has been pursuing.

The Times editorial staff continues to write interesting and instructive editorials.

My own views are, subject to learning more:

1. Apparently, the program had been the subject of newspaper articles earlier so these disclosures are not particularly new.
2. It appears to fit with the ongoing stance of the administration that they do not need to adhere to any checks and balances in doing such.
3. Disclosing it would only verify what any one would already suspect. So it doesn't tell them something new.
4. I don't see anything to date that endangers operatives.
5. Thus, the "outrage" seems purely, my description now, political, a way to energize the base. Not only the above suggests that but the rather long wait after the newspaper articles were first published before the major figures within the admin did their act, also suggests it.
