There is, however, one way to avert a public relations disaster for Israel, to limit casualties, and to restore Israel's deterrence power: Israel must return to the targeted-killing policy that enabled Mr. Sharon to triumph over terrorist organizations.

Oren makes good sense here. But I think he should go farther. I think Israel is being muddle-headed and missing a chance to redefine the rules. Stop talking about terror attacks that the PA ought to stop. That's Oslo language. Oslo is dead and ought to be declared dead once and for all. The attack on the border outpost was a military ambush, soldiers to soldiers. Israel should just officially declare the PA an enemy state (the Israeli Supreme Court already did) and cut all aid and diplomatic niceties. They want war? Fine, let them have their wish. Let Gaza get power and money from Egypt!

I think Sharon would have done it. His technique was to maneuver for running room so that at each encounter, Israel had more options; wriggling out of the Oslo straighjacket Arafat had imposed on Israel.
