John, I share all your concerns. I guess I'm just more reticent than some to breach security.

Which goes to motives of those who release and/or publish. I can see three clusters of motives in the decision to publish this: those in government who leak, the journalists who receive the information, and the newspapers who publish it.

I like the conversation you and Dale are having about the motives of government personnel who decide to leak. Helps me understand the structure within which the motives reside better. As for the journalists, I don't know any at the Times involved in these stories but the few I've known are quite responsible. As for the newspapers, that's a whole different kettle of fish. The range of motives is well beyond my kin. I find myself typing abstractions.
