Would you do so knowing that time was critical and that you would have to wait for them to conduct a "proper" interrogation so they can discover the "hide-out" where your child might be, as well as the identity of the co-kidnappers?" There is no time that is more appropriate to live by high moral standards than when you are being tested. In fact, declarations of high moral standards mean little or nothing at other times. If time were critical, waiting or wasting time by involving the bureaucracy of law enforcement might be the dumbest of all choices, and has little to do with my moral standards. Circumstance and conscience would dictate my course of action. I am not a pacifist. "Or would you take matters into your own hands ... What I would or wouldn't do in the midst of a violent confrontation in which control over my circumstance, my emotions, and my physical being has been lost is hardly relevant to my position on torture. If I were to catch up with one, it wouldn't be in the spirit of detainment, it would likely be in an active resolution role, including combat if called for. Detaining a prisoner implies that the prisoner is subdued and no longer a participant in conflict. If my captured kidnapper is still an active participant in some sense, I would not consider him subdued. If the kidnapper had information that was useful in the recovery of my daughter I am sure the kidnapper would have some agenda for releasing that information and my conduct would be responsive to that agenda.
