Educated people it seems always knew the world was round. There is at least one verse referring to the Earth being round in the Bible (Isiah) and some Greek dude estimated the circumference pretty accurately. But it is much harder to work out that the sun doesn't go around the Earth.

The roundness of the Earth is so obvious.... I guess if you lived inland never left your own village and never climbed a mountain you might think it was flat. Then maybe you could think you live in some kind of basin that creates the horizon, but it doesn't really look like that. Of course if you did live in a valley and never left it and never climbed the hills you wouldn't ever get a suspicion something was wrong :)
