If I was PJ, I would take this statement into any meeting with the government...this is direct from the TRAI website.

OTOH, these numbers also give you an idea as to why Reliance is thinking about switching to GSM. They end up subsidizing the handsets more while getting less ARPU on higher minutes of use. Not exactly a great formula for the operators....

C. Tariff Trends:
All India Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for Mobile service (GSM) for
the quarter ending March 2006 was Rs. 366 showing a marginal increase of
1.2 % from Rs.362 for the quarter ending December 2005. There is
decrease of 7% in ARPU as compared to that of March 2005.

All India ARPU for mobile service (CDMA) for the quarter ending March
2006 remained same at Rs.256 as for QE December 2005.

Average minutes of Usage (MOU) per subscriber per month for Mobile
service (GSM) for the quarter ending March 2006 was 395 as compared to
393 per month during the quarter ending Dec-05. Annual increase in
MOUs in comparison to 344 during March 2005 is around 15%.

Average MOU per subscriber per month for mobile service (CDMA) for the
quarter ending March 2006 was 550 as compared to 462 per month during
the quarter ending December 2005, recording an increase of about 19 %.
Annual increase in MOUs in comparison to 344 during March 2005 is
around 60%.

The All India blended Revenue Per Minute (RPM) for Mobile Service (GSM)
for the quarter has marginally increased from Rs.0.92 in the quarter ending
Dec-05 to Rs. 0.93 in the quarter ending March 06.

The All India blended Revenue Per Minute (RPM) for Mobile Service (CDMA)
for the quarter was Rs.0.47 as compared to Rs.0.55 in the previous quarter
implying a reduction of 14.5%.
