70% of Americans do NOT support Bush's illegal surveillance programs. That is BS. What people do support is an honest surveillance program which really goes after REAL TERRORISTS and follows the law. People would also forgive occasional emergency measures which bypass FISA laws. The problem is Bush's PR machine has totally misrepresented what is really going on, even framing this as a surveillance program against "terrorists". Very likely it is simple a Nixonian J. Edgar Hoover type spy program against anyone the rightwing GOP sees as their own enemies, including the press, judges, lawyers, business leaders and democratic politicians. Also, what people don't know is that FISA laws are set up to give the government 72 hours to get a warrant later. SO there is no need to ever bypass FISA. People also don't know who Bushies are spying on. Are they really spying on terrorist suspects only? Very very unlikely. People don't know the facts because Bushies have blocked all investigations. And if the facts came out, I'm sure you would see that what Bush-Cheney have been doing (in the name of "war powers") may have nothing to do with counter-terrorism, and in fact that innocent Americans are being spied upon with warrants. This is far more alarming than any "black helicopter" paranoid fantasies of the rightwing militia movement. This is real and it is happening now. Bottomline though, Bush-Cheney have proven they cannot be trusted and lie all the time. SO why should we trust them with any of these extraordinary new powers which trash the Csontitution and turn the White House into a monarchy?
