What are some reasons for GSM success? Is it that the majority of subscriber adds are the lower level of users who just want service? GSM still enjoying first to market advantage? CDMA operators unable to exploit the differentiation available with CDMA capabilities? Price of handsets? Total system costs?

I wish I had the answer.

My guess is that it is some combination of handset pricing/choice and SIM cards. I also think that CDMA's advantage in spectral efficiencies is eroded by GSM's substantially lower infrastructure costs. Perhaps one area where Qualcomm might have been able to do more over the years is pushing R-UIM in combination with a more standardized approval process for handsets. This might have helped bring handset prices down faster while increasing the variety of handsets available on every network.

All I know for sure is that there is something to the fact that GSM is being chosen over CDMA by customers that goes beyond this thread's traditional answer of corruption.
