If your point is only that the mainstream media do an exceptionally poor job of informing the public, then I agree. They seem to be getting worse every year, as ratings and corporate profits become the only barometers of a successful news organization.

If you are trying to imply that they do such a piss poor job because of some kind of political agenda, I think you're way off base.

Just look at who they are, Allen, and what they believe. Every election year, somebody polls the newsrooms of major dailies, asking, Republican or Democrat? Every year the answer is 85% Democrat or better.

I don't have to posit any conspiracy beyond obvious motives for sameness caused by deadline pressure, competitiveness and laziness, always in operation. I just have to believe that people get up out of bed in the morning and take their attitudes to work with them. That's all.

In the case of Iraq reporting, laziness, the fact that it's dangerous, the not-so-subliminal instructions from the editors back home not to get too fraternal with the American troops, and general appalling ignorance of military history or military affairs all work together to produce the effect of context-free police blotter reporting.

Soldiers are portrayed as victims or murderers. Anything that has traditionally been regarded as heroic is not regarded as worth reporting. For example, somebody won The Medal of Honor for his combat in Iraq. Do you know who and for what?

Body counts, however, are reported religiously.
