did you 81 year old mother-in-law start to critize Bush because democrats told her he was going to take away her social security?

Yes, Republicans want to cancel the SS, and if allowed to do so, they will. I keep hearing these things from older folks during every election. And even during re-elections. Dems stand up for the people, and Reps - for business. Amazing how deeply these perceptions have been drilled in.

No, they are independently well-off. It would be very convenient to blame it on something like that, wouldn't it?But that is a large (and quite condescending, by the way) mistake to make. This-- as I keep repeating-- has nothing to do with the Democrats. She would never vote Democrat (though she does respect Lieberman). They are patriots through and through. My father-in-law lost a leg in WWII.

I don't understand why so many can't separate these ideas. If you don't agree with Bush, it must be the Democrats' fault. If the Republicans refuse to go further than superficial blame it on the Other thinking because they are comfortable with this excuse, it will work against them.

My mother-in-law even at 81 is a highly educated, articulate woman who stays current and reads constantly. Her opinion has changed slowly over the past few years as she watched the out of control spending, the missteps in the war, and the pushing of the far right agenda, which she abhors.
