Expanding on your idea.......................... If PLNI made appropriate glue-on and/or screw-fastened couplers (..much like Unistrut or Kindorf..), schools, insituitions, Parks, etc., could build bike racks as they need them - custom fit to the space available to put them. Hundreds of other sues, also. Likewise, homeowners and Do-It-Yourselfers could fabricate interesting assemblies to use in Kid's Rooms, their shops or garages, or for trellises, etc. Kind of like Lincoln Logs, Erector Sets, and Lego's for big people.
