>>like-minded people are pushed to more and more extreme positions when they group together.<<

It didn't take a study to show that.

The politicians are as worried as I am. Let's see if they do anything about it.

Why don't WE do something about it? Every time a homogenous thread shouts down or runs off non-conforming points of view expressed civilly it exacerbates the problem. You can watch the demonization grow bolder when there are no challenges to it. If threads want to be homogenous, at least they can police themselves on some of the excesses. If people are really worried about it, that is.

Nice find, Neeka! And timely, for sure. We've always thought this thread was a step or two ahead of the pack, and this article is yet another example.

I think there are many reasons for the divide, some of which I've commented on. IMO of course.

Partly, it is caused by the manipulative media.

Partly by the politicians.

Partly because the schools don't teach American History as much as they used to.

Partly because many people who are coming into this country aren't assimilating into the larger community, but rather flocking together, and not learning English, nor the customs of their new country.

Partly because of demonization of everyone who thinks a different way.

And a large part of the reason for the divide is caused by all of us.

The greater, royal, universal, us.

Everyone wants people to understand their concerns, both on the plus side, and on the minus. Today we have a large group of people who never heard of manners, it would appear. If they ever heard of them, many don't believe in using them.

We are the only country in the world that is trying to assimilate millions of people into this country, and all of them are bringing their own baggage (so to speak) with them, and all of us have our own baggage to deal with as well.

I don't know if the Golden Rule is universal or not. Perhaps if everyone on earth thought about it at least once in awhile, we would all understand and get along with each other better.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
