[EDIT] I agree. Before we (or others) go too far with this, I should note that there are three different versions of this story floating around/published today. Although the details differ, all reference a confession by at least one of those involved. In that case, the story really was beyond the "merely an allegation" stage. Whether it ranks as high as its placement is, as I said, a purely subjective decision.

I didn't mean to argue that politics is the only, or the primary determinant in story location. I think that, under normal circumstance, "what sells newspapers" is the primary consideration. ("If it bleeds, it leads") It would be foolish to pretend, however, that these decisions are always so straightforward (or made in a vacuum).

The Times is sufficiently disturbed by the reaction they have received to their SWIFT story decision that they have felt compelled to defend it repeatedly on a daily basis since publication both in the paper and by making select employees available for interview by television outlets. (The LA Times has been less successful at keeping it's representatives on-target, as reporter Doyle MacManus provided two completely different versions of their activities within the space of two days while one of the editors was busy spinning a third.)

[EDIT: What I was given turns out NOT to be what it purported to be now that I finally checked the original. How embarrassing! Apologies to all]
