We all get our hedonics crap from BLS.

Or ... you could buy one now with the same qualities as you bought five years ago (though you would probably have to either buy it at a pawn shop or a junk shop) and you would pay a lot less than if you had bought it five years ago. Good luck in finding repair parts for it, though.

Precisely my point. You cannot get one with the same qualities. So it makes no sense to artificially lower the price. The catalytic converter in a car is one of the many items that are hedonically adjusted. It may not be possible at all to find a car without one. It is outright fraud then to say that I paid X (cost of car) minus Y (cost of catalytic converter) dollars for the car when in fact there is no earthly way for me to pay less than X dollars.

The BLS hedonics BS is so ridiculous that one of these days, one can look forward to a situation where, when one bought something, he actually got it for "free"! Or that the seller of the product "gave" the buyer money so the buyer could take the product off the seller's hands! :-)
