Yup, I'm against it mainly on principle, and also to an extent for pragmatic reasons (very hard to make it work, possibly impossible without broad restrictions on freedom of speech and then the issue of principle becomes even bigger, also campaign finance restrictions tend to favor incumbents, and people who are independently wealthy). I don't care much about the optics, at least in terms of choosing my overall ideas or eventual goals. I might care about optics when/if I try to map out how to get to the eventual goals or change things to fit more with my overall ideas, but the concern would just be tactical.
