Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) secured endorsement of Rhode Island Republicans, the Providence Journal reports.

Chafee is engaged in a nasty primary spat with conservative Cranston Mayor Stephen P. Laffey, who boycotted the convention and called it a "charade." According to the Journal, Laffey's campaign spread rumors last week that Chafee was planning to dump the GOP and seek reelection as an Independent.

Chafee used his acceptance speech to blast Laffey for being unable to win in a state with dismal approval ratings for President Bush: "Let's be honest, this seat cannot be won on the Republican votes alone," Chafee said. "We need the votes of independents and Democrats to win."
