July 2, 1776, as your source and my source both say, is the day that the Continental Congress voted for independence. loc.gov Between July 2 and July 4, 1776, they fine-tuned the language of the "Declaration of Independence," a formal document which embodies the agreement reached on July 2, 1776. The differences between the two documents are trivial. loc.gov This appears to be one more occasion where some prefer to focus on form, and some prefer to focus on substance. Not worth arguing over. More neat stuff here: loc.gov
