Through the 80's? Doubt it seriously. Now I know there were occassional Red hunts. I remember when the Texas City Sun, often referred to as the "Texas City Hun" because of its markedly right of almost everyone's orientation, went on a Red hunt looking for communists at the College of the Mainland. It came up dry, to no ones great surprise. Junior Colleges just generally aren't a hotbed of counter-culturism...

That was in the mid-1980s. Finding true believers in communism, much less admirers of Stalin or Mao, would have been really tough. Very well may have been different in Europe though.
