Any presidential candidate who doesn't aim for a 58-60% win and comfortable majorities in both houses of Congress is just headed down the same stale road.

At some point, that was, of course, the Bush dream. Create a generation, at least, long dominance by the Republican party.

There have been 10 presidential elections in my lifetime. Only 1972 and 1984 had a majority that large. Expand the period to all the elections after 1820 and you only get four more with a 58+% margin.

Edit - But 7 of the 9 elections to 1820 (inclusive) had majorities of at least 61.4%
