Surely they didn't plan the whole thing--initiate the leak themselves so that the Times would publish so they could get fodder for the base... Do you remember when, routinely, certain US politicians and pundits would expect such evil genius of the Soviets. Nope, I don't think they are even half that clever. But I do think they had ample time, during those several weeks of conversation with the Times trying to convince them not to publish it, to figure out how to take advantage of it. Leak it to the WSJ and the LATimes for one thing.
