Because, for those with common sense, IF we are indeed responsible for global warming and we sit around and do nothing about it the consequences are catastrophic.

My common sense tells me that the current models can't predict whether the consequences of doing nothing will be catastrophic or barely noticeable. Furthermore, even according to the current models, "doing something" about fossil fuels will have only a marginal effect on greenhouse gases, and that's if the models are right.

This is a case of yelling "Don't just sit there! Do SOMETHING!" when you don't know what to do. This may make you feel better but it's really unlikely to be of practical use.
