If they knew about it. But as in that case from the link I provided you (which you probably didn't read), that one guy found that asteroid a mere 36 HOURS before it passed close to the earth... What if it had, instead, been on a path to collide? There would have been no chance to mount a credible program to defend against it. And global warming will NEVER be a global killer. The atmosphere can only handle so much water vapor (which is the real cause of global warming). It will reach 100% humidity and precipitate when the barometric pressure is low enough. And if the ocean conveyor stops, then we'll have an ice age and the historical cycle of ice ages and warming trends will recommence.. But it would not be a global killer. It would just be quite uncomfortable for those living in various latitudes. Btw, I'm not discounting the possibility of global warming, or the potential repercussions from it. HOWEVER, the angle that I'm approaching it from is NOT strictly a "luddite" anti-industrial attitude. What YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE should think about is what you're going to do if global warming might be a continuation of a paleo-climatic trend that the planet has been on for thousands of years, and that man has only exacerbated in recent history. That might mean it would be time to think about the efficacy, as well as the morality, of preserving the current status of the planet as it is now by delving into geo-engineering techniques. And that would lead to terra-forming... Hawk
