Perhaps I misunderstood your two audience argument. I recognize that what the public knows is not the same as what the cognoscenti know. Even given that the general audience of the Times, it seems to me that top placement requires something more than the presentation to the great unwashed of info that is unknown only to the great unwashed. The info would have to be inherently hotter than that to warrant such prominence--something brand new to sophisticates, something scandalous or illegal, something immediate, or novel, something. It wasn't any of those things. Which gives some credence to notions that it was a political attack or scoopitis, something less than noble.
