You are talking about "one guy" from an article. What makes you think that NASA didn't already have that information??

Then it wouldn't have been newsworthy, now would it...

The point was that no one had previously detected and reported the object (which would have been given a number when discovered).

The point is what are we going to do when the next one just "pops in" unannounced and it's on a collision course?

The solar system is a big place and NO ADMINISTRATION has provided the necessary amount of funding to develop accurate detection, tracking, and destruction capabilities to protect this planet.
