Yes, I remember that defense being used about atrocities in Viet Nam.

If we've got to the point in the war where atrocities are expected by people who support the war -- it seems to me that we have -- then we're also getting to the point where the rest of us will become so revulsed that we'll demand an end to it. That's my recollection of Viet Nam.

When old timers say "we lost the will to fight in Viet Nam" they mean the country became divided between those willing to do anything to win, and those who were sickened by atrocity after atrocity.

Bin Laden's probably right, I, for one, don't have the stomach for more of this.
