You mean that the US is not enough like a third world country don't you? I.e. that is where the SIM's seem most popular.

The lack of SIM's allows the operators in the US to subsidize handsets to the tune of $150 every two years (at least at Sprint) and they would be less willing to do that if they couldn't amortize the subsidy over the life of the contract.
