Israel orders escalation of action after Hamas rocket
BEN LYNFIELD
IN JERUSALEM
ISRAELI leaders yesterday ordered a military escalation in order to "change the rules" of the Jewish state's battle with the radical Hamas movement a day after a Hamas rocket fired from Gaza struck for the first time in the heart of the southern city of Ashkelon.

A meeting of the Israeli security-political cabinet prompted by the rocket strike, which damaged a school but caused no injuries, authorised "prolonged and graduated security activity" to stop rocket fire and to free Gilad Shalit, an army corporal being held in Gaza since being captured by Palestinian militants on 25 June.

"Against the background of the abduction and continued firing of rockets and mortars, including the firing of the Kassam rocket at Ashkelon, preparations must be made to bring about a change in the rules of the game and in the modus operandi vis-à-vis the Palestinian Authority and Hamas," a cabinet statement said.
