I didn't buy the explanation at all. Superman is an American creation and a big part of the tone of the comics revolved around that particular phrase. When the French, or Japanese, or Indian film makers start changing the scripts of their movies dealing with their cultural icons so as to scrub them of the very things that give them meaning in the first place I'll buy the 'wider audience' rational.

And yes, I know it's only a comic book character, but still think that it is symbolically a big deal.
