Srini - spot on, Nokia is clearly in a hurry to get rid of CDMA in time for April '07 WCDMA negotiations. They want to make this a WCDMA-only fight. I agree here that Qcom could also ship unlicensed chipsets to Samsung or others, but I wonder whether Samsung would want to buy Q's product given the risks of litigation with Nokia? Its interesting that TI and BRCM have both chosen Korea to make their latest complaint. There's no easy resolution here - its a total mess.

I'd be shocked if Nokia would even consider an IPR spinco, as there would be too big a negative backlash from operators.

Nokia has much more to lose, they can't expect to do WCDMA without a license from QCOM. Despite the recent GSM hype, GSM is not 3G. nokia was one of the first companies to license with QCOM for IS95(CDMAOne). Why? Years later they complained that the same license covered 3G(it of course didn't)and there was no need for another agreement with QCOM for CDMA2000 and WCDMA. Again, nokia eventually signed the 3g license which they repeatedly said they didn't need! Why? Now many are claiming nokia will just ignore QCOM and continue to produce and sell WCDMA product beyond their legal right to do so! Perhaps someone can explain to me how and why? Answers to the effect that royalty rates are to high, Nokia now has more WCDMA IP than QCOM or QCOM has monopolistic business practices don't fly with the legal opinions that I have secured.
