The closings will mean that the state will forego more than $1 million a day in tax revenue, and $2.2 million a day in state lottery revenue.

Republicans today voiced concern over the shutdown, but were critical of Democrats for failing to resolve a rift within their ranks. Joseph R. Malone, III, a Republican from Burlington County who sits on the Assembly budget committee, voiced a common Republican theme: "If this is a product of one-party rule, that's an eye-opener to the public. This wouldn't have happened if Republicans had the Senate, the Assembly or the governor's seat. You couldn't do it. You'd be so vilified. You couldn't do it."

Assemblyman Bill Baroni, a Republican from Mercer County, said the situation was "the gravest Constitutional crisis New Jersey may have ever faced."
