It is important - that they want to turn Superman into some internationalist hero. An alien for sure. One that was raised in the American midwest, apple pie country, and represented the best of American values. All those passe things. Now he is a mere conflicted everyman that just happens to be invulnerable. Doesn't matter a wit that he's culturally American. He may as well be from Uganda, why not!

It is all too antiquated, I suppose. I think it belies the cynicism and discomfort of the writers with portraying American values as positive.

They should have just dropped the whole phrase. I'm sure some would still have noticed and complained but I think the reaction would have been less.

To give another example If they where going to remove "In God we trust" from money, I'd rather they just remove it rather than trying to substitute another word for God, or just say "we trust" or "trust".
