Same here -g- ... saw the speech noted in this piece - Message 22591001
... here's the speech in the original hansard, runs three pages, those quotes on the third - memory.loc.gov

Lincoln has always been seen as a friend in México, as are Thoreau and Webster and others ... later on, he and Juárez tried to aid each other, to the extent possible under their circumstances ... i guess there is some irony to it, if this speech does indeed cast him into the political wilderness and enable him to rise later and preside over the US while it sustains the great majority of the casualties from its entire history to date ... but there have always been the Thoreaus and the Lincolns, same as there have always been the Polks, Clays, Calhouns, etc ... thought of this when Tom was concerned about México being friendly ... well first, nations don't have friends, they have interests, and secondly sure their inhabitants have friends, but they pick and choose them based on experience -g-
