If that happens ExxonMobil will be happy to keep prices that high and pocket the profits. They've seen, after all, the limited price elasticity at an average $3/gallon. I'm sure they're constantly tinkering with models which show how far they can go and still maintain volume.

That would be yet another rightwing transfer of wealth from the majority to the tiny minority. This leads to misery, destabilization and, eventually, revolution. I don't think you want that do you?
