How? As an individual, don't drive an SUV.
What do I do? Still have to get a better pick-up (I live in the country, dirt roads, snow in winter; need a pick-up). I'm hoping a good plug in/hybrid comes out.
But I park and walk where I can. I'm solar. My family has been recycling from the git; about '69 or '70. Double paned window. Good insulation. Compact fluorescents.

Heat with wood, which is carbon neutral, but creates pollution. Took out my old Ashley woodburner, and filled the fireplace with an insert. Mostly I run the house cold. Even with a family of 4 living here, don't think we ever used more than 3/4 cord; now I'm down to less than half/year. Often, when I get home from work at 0630, I'll play on the net til my fingers are too cold and then go to bed. Too lazy to make a fire, and I stay warm enuf in bed. Got about 300 trees around my place I have planted over the years. I even turn off lights at work. For a number of years, I was an organic farmer on the Farmers' Mkt. circuit. No carbon used to make pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers. Actually increased the carbon content of my soil, per the soil testing I was required to do.
What can the country do? Require better mileage standards and emission standards for cars. 55mph speed limit (so I will drive 60 :>). Major commitment to electric rail. Fix the grid, just to improve efficiency. National commitment to renewable energy. Mandatory recycling. Lots of little changes can be made in the way we do things. Hemp (illegal here, because puritans confuse it with marijuana) is 10x better than corn as a biofuel. This country needs to develop a hemp industry. Cogeneration encouraged (my hospital has a co-generator that I think was connected to an Ennron subsidiary; I dunno.) Anyway, we have a co- generator and an incinerator for medical waste. They need to be connected.
Green buildings. Green government buildings.
