Long Positions (short, medium, or long term) ...

[Moved from the other moderated board which specifically prohibits discussion of personal holdings.]

Hello qwave,

<< Eric, How is your NOK long treating you? >>

Better than my QCOM long. <ggg>

That NOK position established at $12.12 almost exactly two years ago on the day Nokia reported Q2'04 earnings and was falling like a knife and before they bottomed in mid-August 2004 at $10.89, has treated me exceptionally well, thank you.

Along with a TXN position established a few months later at an average price of ~$18.50 and a reentry into ARMHY, the 3 compensated for the atrocious performance of QCOM in that period following QCOM's nice bounceback from the mid-2000 trough when I went OW QCOM to its 2004 high established after I exited that OW QCOM position, leaving my core intact. That's why I choose to hold a basket in wireless and companies that enable digital convergence, seldom entering unless a quality company's stock is near a 52 week low, and taking profit at close to a newly established 52 week high if I feel the sector, or the stock has gotten ahead of itself.

I'll conclude this post with excerpts from posts I made earlier this year on TMF and here, that will give you an indication of how I protected profit in techs in general, and some specific wireless holdings when I sensed that tech and the sector were getting ahead of themselves late last year and earlier this year ...

<< 23.50 was not such a bad short target after all, huh? 52 high 23.47. >>

For those inclined to short -- and I'm not one of those -- QCOM would have been a much better short target when it got well ahead of itself at earlier this year, would it not have?

As Jim Mullens noted earlier on our other board ...

% off high
NOK...............18%
QCOM............ 35%

Going one step further ...

                      CYTD One Year Two Years
======= ======== =========
NOK +4.81% +21.55% +59.70%
S&P 500 -0.64% +1.08% +13.38%
QUALCOMM -20.06% -11.71% +1.77%

I will by the way stick by my projected closing price for QCOM at year end in the toaster contest even though the low I projected was taken out some time ago, and I'm now somewhat doubtful that we will make the high ...

Adding the Range to my YE ... CYE $51.25: 39.84-61.24

Judge for yourself ...

Back on March 13 a poster to the TMF Nokia board on a thread called 'Decisions, Decisions' asked ...

I'm so tempted to take my 100% gain and run! Any thoughts?

I replied ...

Only you can decide. If I were you (which I'm not) I would probably consider taking the gain, banking it, and investing it in NOK or another later (if you are inclined to do that at such time). I'm seriously considering locking in some profit from my long position established in July 2004 at a price not much higher than today's should we go slightly higher in the short term. I personally think we'll see a post earnings retreat, and a general retreat in techs and wireless sector at that time before they run again, BWDIK? (not much). I have reduced several techs at or near their 52-week highs, in the last month, while continuing to hold at least 50% in each case.

A week earlier on the TMF QUALCOMM board I had told TrenchRat (David Gordon), my favorite TMF chart guru ...

Diligent visual investor that you are, I'll be following you a little closer than normal in the near future because I'm seeking a reentry on my LT core QCOM position. A substantial GTC limit sell at $49.86 on ½ my QCOM position that I had placed some time ago hit yesterday before I got a chance to nudge it up, which I really meant to do. As much as I value my full QCOM position, which I will replenish. I am in no hurry to replenish. We might run a bit more in the pre-earnings ramp but I expect a decent reentry point to occur in between post-earnings and Labor Day. Over the years, if nothing else, I've learned that patience rewards, and that what goes up usually comes down before it goes back up. I might add that I sold ½ my large and much appreciated shares of QUALCOMM's direct competitor TI (TXN) on a much appreciated (+70%) year or so old position at $32.50 (as you know) to lock in profit not long after they issued Q3 earnings last year and never regretted it, and while it has never hit my lower reentry price target, and although it has been higher by several dinero than that reduction point, today it closed at $30.82, despite very positive mid-quarter guidance rendered a few days back that did not meet street expectations. Notorious sandbagger QCOM of course already had the positive upgrade already built in.

In mid-April on the TMF Nokia board I posted this ...

Full Disclosure (already reported here and/or elsewhere months to a week ago and 8 of my 12 somewhat reduced current equity holds are in my TMF profile). This is verbatim from an April 1 post I made to the Nokia board I moderate on SI:

Message 22316255

Techs are enjoying a nice run but personally I took down NOK 50% on Thursday at $21.25, CSCO down 50% at $22 on Friday, QCOM down 50% at $49.86 a few weeks back, TXN down 50% at $32.50 late last year and recently sold 75% of the JDSU shares that I acquired last year at $1.35 for $4.10 and got out of my LU flyer altogether. These could all run higher into earnings and even beyond but I'm content to pocket substantial profit, and I think we'll see a tech pullback in summer. If we do, I'll probably add some of these back in some portion, but I officially retire on June 30, and consequently I'm in the middle of a complete portfolio overhaul with considerably more income orientation. Fifteen months ago I was about 50% invested in individual equities or growth funds - down from 80% at the end of 1999 when I started to pull back to cash, albeit not as quickly as I should have -- but by end of year that number [individual equities in tax deferred accounts as opposed to funds] will be 25% to 30%. I do expect a tech and sector pullback after CQ1 earnings are announced, even if we get a short bounce -- the usual stuff in a typically seasonal market as we head into the 'Dog Days of Summer' -- but I also expect a strong finish to this year by major players like QUALCOMM.

One further note. I took down TXN another 50% when it hit $35 so what I hold is all pure profit. Wish I'd done the same with CSCO when it was a bit higher.

I do expect to be adding back to several of my vacated positions and possiblyy adding some OPWV in the next six to eight weeks. I always shop in August, and also have cash equivalents set aside to do so. I did already nibble a bit on the QCOM falling knife a bit on the way down.

<< Eric, How is your NOK long treating you? >>

Hopefully I was properly responsive to your question, and I hope your portfolios are doing well ...

Best,

- Eric -

Schlemiel or Schmozzle ...

... or just a plain throwaway schmuck?

qwave,

Let us get down to the nitty-gritty my man.

For whatever reason you don't have the caljones to fill out an SI profile, but based on prior comments you have made to these boards I have the impression that you are now, or were formerly, a QUALCOMM employee. A UFO.

If you are not, or were not, and I have the wrong impression, you have the floor and the capability to confirm or deny.

Regardless, on April 24 you stated here ...

NOK good short at 23.50.

On that day QCOM opened at $51.07, hit a high of $52.49, and closed at $52.30.

On that day NOK opened at $22.67, hit a high of $22.81, and closed at $22.80.

NOK closed today at $19,74 down 13.4% from their April 24 close.

QCOM closed today at $35.38 down 32.5% from their April 24 close.

I would suggest to you that on April 24, their were several better short candidates than NOK, and one was QCOM.

Do you agree?
