JCP, I think you've "defended the rich" frequently. I don't believe in hiking up their taxes just for the sake of soaking the rich. If that's "defending the rich" to you, then that's pretty shallow thinking. I do believe in restructuring the tax code, though. Unfortunately, it's like campaign finance reform. You can never eliminate all of the loopholes, nor can you prevent the rich from exploiting them. Heck, even the charitable contributions from Buffet and Gates is a form of legal tax evasion.
