Hence, PHD = Piled Higher and Deeper. <vbg>

Fortunately I never finished my doctoral studies so I can pontificate freely.

The thing I notice about {some} PhD holders is that since they have had to defend a complex issue, from a first principles level often, and make it make sense to others at a most basic level, they have a grasp on basic understanding that is often missing by those accustomed to lesser levels of application. When one seeks understanding of a field that allows synthesis, or original thought, it is a pleasure to speak to this level or approach to a topic. I won't say I disdain other levels of knowledge in a field but it gives some comfort to listen to people who have wrestled with this depth. I used to say I would not even discuss geology with someone who was less than PhD. In fact I relax this rule to my profit often, but I find that when geology is an interesting topic to discuss the other side has often done some graduate study.
