There are many physical characteristics in which there is a trend for a property to change with respect to another input.

For example gasses take up a smaller volume as the temperature decreases. If you follow the trend the gas would take up zero space at some point. Before that happens the gas undergoes a phase-change and becomes a liquid. Liquids have a whole new set of changes to temperature.

High energy physisists have tested particles at higher and higher energies to find what phases and changes take place. This is kind of like working backwards towards the big bang.

I think many people assume that there is some sort of phase-change that occurs before r=0, but at this point I don't think anyone knows what it is.
