I believe in speaking softly, but carrying a big stick. The expenditures on the cold war were probably necessary. I take no argument there.

You might want to think how peaceful the world was in the 1950's etc. Peace was not so kind for all the dictators we have sponsored just because they aligned with us instead of the USSR. Think about Iran, Iraq, Philippines, etc.

We installed most of those dictator through coups. It hasn't worked all that well, has it? Which gets back to my point on meddling in their affairs.

Most educated Middle Easterners? Give me a break how the hell would you know. Who do you think is supporting all these terrorists so that these educated people can remain in their power structure?

It's probably true that there are well educated people running things in the middle east. I never really considered Saddam well educated. Many of the Saudi Royals were educated in the west and are pro western. I would say in my own experience in meeting educated Arabs that they appreciate our culture and most embrace it. That seems to be the experience of others as well:

We have been in the middle easterners affairs for the last 100 years, the only hope of exiting without chaos happens when we leave representative democracy behind.

You make my point eloquently. We have been messing with them, mainly to extract resources, for decades. The pigeons have come home to roost.

Democracy can be supported in many other ways besides forced at the barrel of a gun. In fact I believe that method of democratization is doomed to failure, or at least it will help to postpone unnecessarily the inevitable development of representative government.

To find a clue about what I am saying read the Declaration of Independence and see what motivated the initiation of the greatest nation on earth. Remember your roots to understand the ways of others.
