I was amazed in Amsterdam when I started to see people driving SUVs. Apart from the petrol, they are hell to park in old, small European towns.

The trends in the UK that let you cope with higher gas prices will work in the US too. Plus we are a credit-crazed nation, so buying gas on plastic is always doable. Couple that with the fact the these new neighborhoods have NO public transport alternatives and people will adjust so they can keep driving as much as they have to.

A family that spends $200 a month on gas can handle $400 if they don't go out to eat as often. Not a big deal when the gross family income is probably near $100K or better. Not big enough to send them storming over to the anti-growth lobby.
