Important article for apple watchers:

Asustek hits record monthly NB shipment in June
Jul 06, 2006
Benefiting by its growing shipments to Apple Computer, the monthly notebook PC shipment volume of Asustek Computer Inc. hit a record monthly high of 500,000 units - including both OEM sales and ASUS own-brand sales - in June.

emsnow.com

Consider this in relation to the following datapoints.

- Asustek shipped a little over 1 million notebook units in Q1 (see my previous digitimes post)
- Asustek supplies the 12" powerbooks and ibooks to apple (not the Macbook pros, those come from Quanta)
- Apple has sold between 450K and 550K notebook units per quarter historically

Digitimes rebutted the China daily rumor that Asus built 300K Macbooks in June for Apple. But if this Asus news is true, then that 300K number is closer to correct than 125K. The Asus notebook volume (anything NOT macbook) is probably steady state.

With the new tactic of adopting Intel's processors in its PC models, Apple announced an ambitious shipment goal of selling 2.5 million units in the first half. Currently, Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Ind. Co. Ltd. is responsible for contract supplying the iMac desktop machines (which began selling in January), Quanta Computer Inc. for the 14- and 15-inch MacBook Pro models, while Asustek is responsible for the MacBook. Asustek's subsidiary Asusalpha Computer Inc. actually makes the MacBooks for Apple.

Lizzie <<Hi Marc! New to apple? Google is the healthier company, but apple is a serious contender (and dirt cheap)>>

Actually I mentioned a while back on the GOOG board that I bought some AAPL at 62 because I saw a big increase in Mac sales coming with the rather unexpectedly smooth and rapid transition to Mactel. I think analysts at the time were looking for a longer dry spell. I've bought some more cheaper since. iPods could be an issue but I haven't seen anything yet that would change my bullishness.
