Singapore's Millionaires Increase at Fastest Pace in World

June 10 (Bloomberg) -- The number of millionaires in Singapore rose at the fastest pace in the world in 2004, according to a report by Cap Gemini & Merrill Lynch & Co.

Singapore millionaires rose 22.4 percent to 48,500, the report said. In the U.S. the number increased 10 percent to 2.5 million and in Hong Kong they rose by 18.8 percent to 67,500. Asia had 2.3 million millionaires last year, up 8.2 percent, the research showed.

Maybe that is in terms of Yuan? not US dollar. Yeah, believe it or not, including apartment/condo/house/car, perhaps 31 million millionaires in China is NOT an exaggeration

As a comparison there are 59,000 millionaires in UAE for a population of 300,000 citizens.

Last October I met a guy who publishes a list of the richest 400 people in China. The cutoff this past year was at $64 million US -- in other words, the 400th richest person in China was worth net US $64 million and 399 were worth more than that. The top of the list was a person worth several billion US$.

He said that most people don't want to be on the list. But once they see no choice, they want their rightful place on the list. Being on the list draws unwanted attention.

BTW, he said only one of the people on his list made his fortune based primarily on leveraging government position/connections. Everybody else was self-made. Most on the list had little education and were from the school of hard knocks. They are the generation who lived through the cultural revolution when education was suspended.
