MEXICO CITY -- Conservative Felipe Calderon appeared to have won Mexico's presidential election by less than half a percentage point today, defeating leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador after more than three days of vote counting and recounting. Lopez Obrador immediately announced he would challenge the result in Mexico's election court.

Lopez Obrador said he would call his followers to a massive rally to protest the result on Saturday in Mexico City's central square, the beginning of what officials say will be a "peaceful and legal" effort to overturn Calderon's victory before Mexico's Federal Electoral Tribunal — and in the court of public opinion.

With reports from 99.5% of Mexico's polling stations counted, Calderon was ahead of Lopez Obrador by about 180,000 votes, a lead that could not be reversed by the remaining uncounted ballots
