Iraq is like Vietnam and we're at that My Lai Massacre point in the struggle where our troops get so damn frustrated and crazed that they blow up and commit atrocities. It's not really the troops' fault (though there are some evil dudes in the mix) it's the fault of the pisspoor planning by the policy-makers and the fact that the troops are stuck there in an overheated, intolerable quagmire without any real end point to it. So all they can care about is just trying to survive day by day and defend each other. It's the main reason we need to redeploy most of our troops ASAP. This is really hurting our military badly. Not to mention our national image and our pocketbooks.
