Chapq,

If some of Qualcomm's fundamental CDMA patents expire in 2007, as Nokia seems to believe, it makes me wonder when the fundamental GSM patents will similarly expire...since its an older technology. I don't remember ever seeing any reports of GSM patents expiring in the past few years. However, I take some comfort in Bill Keitel's explanation at the most recent analyst presentation (William Blair) that Q's fundamental data techniques in EV-DO & Rev. A are largely the basis for HSDPA and HSUPA, respectively. This seems consistent with Q's claim that GPRS and EDGE borrowed various data techniques from those that Q developed in CDMA. It was also interesting that he indicated that some of Q's customers reported that they were being asked to pay GSM royalties of 2-3x the rate that Q charges for CDMA. Oh to be a fly on the wall in the Q-Nokia negotiation sessions. Bri
