I'm sure our resident conservatives will explain to me why this makes sense. To them, at least.

I can do it in one sentence: Politics is the art of the possible.

You wrote,

To me it seems that the lesson for any rogue nation that wants to get respect from the U.S. is that you'd better get nukes, and you'd better do it fast.

Not only for "rogue" nations but for any nation!

To be sure, a nation possessing nukes will keep predator nations at bay and make the playing field level.

A classic example was China: Not until China got her first nukes in the late 1960s was the nuclear blackmail from the US stopped once and for all! Thereafter, the entire world sat up and took notice, and China began to enjoy a new found respect like never before. And, ironically, the so-called "Yellow Peril" is no longer considered as such!!! LOL.

No wonder Iran seeks to possess nuclear weapons.

It is the neocons' theory of "axis of evil" producing disastrous results. Iran will soon be a nuclear power, their ambitions accelerated by the neocons' allegation that they belong to the "axis of evil".

BUsh and his supporters yapped and yapped over his reigning in Saddam. They yapped over his reigning in Gaddafi. They yapped when they ordered the mightiest army to battle a paper tiger (Saddam). They even told the American public that they were winning the war on terror.

They even yapped when they killed Zarqawi. But I am not sure if you noticed the story behind the Zarqawi killing as alleged by his widow. Just like she said in her interview, the US Govt. shut down the CIA unit that was solely dedicated to hunting down Osama and Zawahiri. Is she correct in her allegations?
